Membership on the North Star Trap Club is considered a privilege, not a right. By electing to become a member of the club, you must agree to follow all firearm safety rules and abide by the clubs code of conduct at both practice and all meets in which you participate. How you behave at a meet not only reflects on how others perceive you but also how they perceive your teammates, your coaches, your parents, and your fellow students at North Star. Included below is code of conduct you are expected to follow as a member of this club.
You will be a member of a club that expects high standards of behavior from its members, both at shooting events and in your everyday activities. Therefore, there are certain rules that must be followed.
SHOOTERS SHALL EXERCISE THE HIGHEST LEVEL OF FIREARM SAFETY AT ALL TIMES.
Shooters will abide by all the rules of the Eastern Cornhusker Trapshooting Conference.
Shooters must be enrolled in and attending school in order to participate in practice or meet.
Suspended or expelled students will not be eligible to participate in a meet or practice during the term of suspension or expulsion.
Club members are expected to make satisfactory academic progress outlined by the school administration.
Shooters will act in a safe and responsible manner at all times. This includes the time when not shooting.
Always treat every gun as if it were loaded.
On the firing line, always keep your gun pointed toward the ground or trap house.
Off the firing line, keep your action open and your muzzle pointed in a safe direction.
Once you arrive at the bank you are scheduled to shoot at, place your gun in the gun rack until it is your turn to shoot.
Ear and eye protection is mandatory and must be worn by all shooters on the live range.
No inexperienced member may shoot unless supervised by a designated coach or coaches assistant.
Shooters will come to practice ready to make themselves a better shooter.
Attendance and attitude at practice will affect which squad you shoot on, so please try and attend all practices.
Clean up of traps after practice is the responsibility of ALL shooters. Please help put speakers away, load the traps, and pick up shells at the conclusion of practice.
Come prepared by having the appropriate clothing for the weather conditions and all the items necessary to shoot (earplugs, safety glasses, shells, gun, etc…).
You will be expected to participate in practice by being a good teammate. There will be NO sitting in vehicles. You cannot be a good teammate from your vehicle.
Senior shooters: we expect that you be mindful of the Junior shooters and be willing to support, help, and be a role model for them.
Once the shooter arrives at practice they are the coach’s responsibility, notify coach when leaving practice.
If the shooter does not follow these guidelines, any coach has the right to suspend the shooter from the next meet.
It is the shooters responsibility to know what squad you will be shooting on, what trap bank your scheduled to shoot on, and what time your squad is scheduled to shoot. Be sure you are behind the trap bank with all of your equipment and gear ready to go well in advance of your turn to shoot.
Plan ahead so that you arrive at your assigned trap bank before the squad ahead of you is on their last box.
Forcing your squad to wait for you is not only inconsiderate; it delays the start of every squad that follows you.
Make sure you have your gun, safety glasses, hearing protection and two boxes of shells, with you so that you are ready when your squad is called to shoot.
Avoid any unnecessary movement
Do not raise your gun until the shooter ahead of you fires.
Do not turn around and look at coaches of spectators while at your post.
Do not allow ejected shells from your gun to hit or annoy the other shooters on your squad.
Do not eject your shell on the ground then pick them up while another shooter is preparing to shoot.
Wear a shooting vest or pouch to hold your shells so that you do not have to lean over each time to pick a shell from a box on the ground. You must pick up all empties when you are done shooting.
Do not place a shell in the chamber of your gun until it is your turn to shoot at a target.
You can only have one shell in your gun at any one time.
Do not load your gun while a shooter next to you is preparing for their shot.
If a delay occurs after you have loaded your gun, remove the shell from the chamber until the delay is over.
Do not call with such a loud voice that it trips the thrower at the adjacent station.
Remain at your post facing the trap quietly, until the fifth shooter has fired his/her last shot before turning and starting toward your next post.
When moving to a new post, always turn to your right with your gun unloaded and pointing towards the ground.
When moving from Post 5 to Post 1 you will still need to turn to your right and make sure you walk behind all of the other shooters in your squad.
If you are the squad leader, do not start setting up for your first shot after you have changed posts until you have ensured that all of the other members of the squad are on their posts and ready for their turn.
Consistent way to setup as you prepare for each shot.
This will help both you and your squad to develop a rhythm that makes everyone more comfortable while they are on the line.
Coaching a shooter while they are on the line is not permitted.
Do not turn around to look at a coach, friend, or family member for advice about what you may be doing wrong.
Show good sportsmanship at all times.
If you are doing well, others will notice.
If you are doing poorly do not display any signs of anger.
Throwing your shells on the ground in anger or disappointment after a miss will not be tolerated.
Do not pick up another shooters gun without asking first.
Shooters are almost always happy to have you look at their guns if you ask permission first.
Always report scores to one of the coaches after your rounds are completed.
The use of drugs, alcohol and/or tobacco products by any student shooter is prohibited. Shooters that are reprimanded or charged by school and/or state officials for the use of alcohol or drugs will be suspended from the next week's practices and the next scheduled trap meet. Expulsion from club may apply depending upon severity of charge decided upon by coach, school sponsor, and school rules. Any shooter expelled from school will not be able to participate until expulsion is lifted.
Shooters may not pass forward of their designated yardage for any reason without permission.
Club members are expected to provide encouragement to your fellow team mates by providing them with help and moral support during practice and meets.
Once the shooter arrives at practice they are the coach’s responsibility, therefore leaving any of the trap ranges during any of the shoots without prior coach approval will result in immediate ejection from that shoot and the next shoot.
